Career Profile
Chartered accountants provide a range of financial advice and accountancy services, including auditing and financial analysis
As a chartered accountant, you’ll give advice, audit accounts and provide trustworthy information about financial records. This might involve financial reporting, taxation, auditing, forensic accounting, corporate finance, business recovery and insolvency, or accounting systems and processes.
Chartered accountants work in a range of organisations, including public practice firms and industry and commerce, as well as in the not-for-profit and public sectors. Working strategically, your aim is to maximise profitability on behalf of your client or employer.
Responsibilities
As a Chartered Accountant, you’ll need to:
* manage financial systems and budgets
* undertake financial audits (an independent check of an organisation’s financial position)
* provide financial advice
* liaise with clients (individuals or businesses) and provide financial information and advice
* review the company’s systems and analyse risk
* perform tests to check financial information and systems
* advise clients on tax planning (within current legislation to enable them to minimise their tax liability) and tax issues associated with activities such as business acquisitions and mergers
* maintain accounting records and prepare accounts and management information for small businesses (accountancy)
* advise clients on business transactions, such as mergers and acquisitions (corporate finance)
* counsel clients on areas of business improvement, or dealing with insolvency
* detect and prevent fraud (forensic accounting)
* manage junior colleagues
* liaise with internal and external auditors (where applicable) and deal with any financial irregularities as they arise
* produce reports and recommendations following internal audits or public sector audits
* prepare financial statements, including monthly and annual accounts
* arrange financial management reports, including financial planning and forecasting

Salary
* Starting salaries for accountants vary depending on the location, sector, size and type of firm. Graduates can expect to earn salaries of up to £40,000.
* During training, the average earning potential can be up to £65,000.
* The average annual salary for a chartered accountant in business is £134,000, with an average yearly bonus of over £17,000.
Careers in banking and capital markets tend to attract the highest salaries and larger employers generally pay more than smaller ones.
Salary packages may include benefits such as bonuses, profit-sharing schemes, medical insurance, pensions and car allowances.

Working Hours
Working hours vary depending on the role and the organisation, but typically aren’t 9am to 5pm. Working extra hours in the evening and at weekends is quite common to meet deadlines, particularly in larger firms. As a trainee, you’ll usually be given time off in lieu of any overtime worked.
Flexible working arrangements are usually possible after qualification. You could also work independently by setting up as a sole practitioner.
What to expect
* Jobs are available in most areas throughout the UK but are more commonly found in cities and larger towns, where higher salaries are typically earned. Post-qualification opportunities exist overseas. There are also training opportunities overseas with ICAEW.
* Due to the high-profile, high-responsibility nature of the work, the dress code is usually formal.
* Support and advice for women entering accountancy is offered by Women in Banking & Finance, which aims to empower women to reach their full potential. There is currently still a gender pay gap.
* Travel within a working day is frequent in audit work, which is carried out mainly at client premises. Absence from home overnight and occasional overseas travel is possible.
* Working in other areas, such as tax, or in smaller firms, tends to be more office-based with less travel.

Career prospects
Most chartered accountants train in public practice and the first three years are typically devoted to achieving the CA or ACA qualification. During this time you will build up experience and take on additional responsibilities, including supervising junior staff and liaising more directly with clients.
It may be possible to complete a secondment, where you’d spend time in another area of the practice to broaden your experience, or even work for a period overseas. You would usually remain with the same employer throughout the training contract.
Progression is often structured and opportunities for development and promotion are plentiful. You may become a manager two years after qualification and a senior manager three years after that. Progress to partnership is competitive but is achievable between eight and 15 years after qualification. In small firms, progression may be more rapid. It’s possible to attain the position of finance director of a major company within 10 to 15 years of qualification.
After training, around half of all qualified chartered accountants work outside public practice, in commerce, industry, financial services, banking and the public and not-for-profit sector. Typical roles at the newly qualified stage include internal auditor, financial accountant and business analyst.

Course Assessments - How will I be assessed?
Course Assessments
The Accounting Accredited (Level 2) course at Open Learning College is designed to provide a comprehensive and flexible learning experience. Unlike traditional exam-based courses, our course is marked through a process of continuous assessment, which is guided by your personal tutor.
This means that you won’t have to worry about memorising information for a final exam. Instead, you will have the opportunity to learn at your own pace and apply your knowledge through practical assignments and quizzes at the end of each module. Our online platform allows you to access the course from anywhere and at any time, and you can also choose to receive the course materials by post.
When you complete each module, you will submit your assignments and quizzes online for marking. While there is no word count requirement for these assignments, we do expect well-thought-out and complete answers. Your tutor will provide constructive feedback and guidance on areas for improvement to help you achieve your best performance.
Once your assignments have been verified and assessed, you will be awarded a certificate of achievement from the Open Learning College. This certificate confirms that you have met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the Accounting Accredited (Level 2), and demonstrates your competency and knowledge in this field.

Course Duration - How long will it take to complete the course?

We recommend you spend approximately 160 hours of your time studying for Accounting Accredited (Level 2) course. The pace of study is completely up to you. To give an example, if you dedicate 3 hours per week to study, it would take you one year to complete but if you could spare 6 hours a week you could complete it in six months.

Course Qualification - What qualification will I receive?
Course Qualifications
This is a dual-certification course and you will therefore receive two qualifications. This course is certified by Open Learning College via the Open Pathway Accreditation Programme.
This course leads to a Level 2 for successful learners. This means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 2 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) for England.
This qualification has been developed by Open Learning College to meet the specific needs of our learners and has been accredited by QLS demonstrating the learning activity has reached the required Quality Licence Scheme standards and benchmarks.
The Quality Licence Scheme recognises a provider’s commitment to high-quality courses in the non-regulated sector, by evaluating quality processes and endorsing an organisation. Grading & How it Works
The UK has a unique higher education grading system. Its most unique feature compared to traditional grading systems is that it aims to be more specific in describing students’ academic achievement.
This type of assessment method is highly valued because it offers many advantages. Most importantly it highlights your academic strengths and specific skills, therefore, it helps employers gain a better understanding of your true potential.
Since it is proved to be such an efficient tool to assess students’ performance, many foreign countries like Canada, Australia and India are using the same grading system on some occasions with small changes to fit into their own local educational context.
We use a letter grade scale from A to F to indicate the students’ academic performance. If you get an A it means you have shown outstanding knowledge whereas if you get an F it means your score is not sufficient to pass the exam.

How does distance learning work?
To ensure studying is flexible and convenient, most of our courses are divided into modules. You work through each module at your own pace and time. Once completed, submit the test, quiz, or assignment for marking. The support period is dependent on the type of course you choose; our minimum support period is one year.
When can I start the course?
The answer is simple, when YOU want; you can start the course at any time we do not have any set enrolment dates. Most of our courses don’t requireany previous experience or qualifications. All you need is a desire and motivation to succeed. You can even start right now – call and speak to one of our Course Advisors.
How long does the course take?
This is dependent upon your choice of course and how fast you want to learn. A full breakdown of the course is available in the course brochure or online. We do provide estimated number of study hours; ask our course advisors for details.
Do the courses have tutorial support?
Yes, you will be allocated a tutor who specialises in your chosen subject and will guide you through the course, mark your assignments and generally help you with any problems you may have.
If I fail an assignment can I retake it?
Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you support as to where you could improve.
How do I get help with my course work?
You can get help by submitting a question to your tutor via the online portal and by submitting your assignments for marking. You must send your assignments one at a time so the tutor can mark one and give you feedback.
Will I get a qualification at the end?
Our courses provide you with a dual certification upon successful completion of the course. You will receive an Open Pathway Accreditation (OPA.dip) from our college. The second qualification will be awarded by the Ofqual awarding body for the course.
Will I have to sit an examination?
Most of our courses do not require you to sit examinations, only continual assessments. Where there are examinations required, you will receive all the information you need to make your own exam arrangements. Please note exam fees are not included in your course fee, unless otherwise stated.
Do I have to buy any other materials?
Our comprehensive course materials are designed to be self-contained with all the relevant information you require to complete the course and gain the relevant certification. However, some of our students undertake additional reading via relevant textbooks/study guides and/or the Internet to add value to their studies.
