Embark on a transformative learning journey with the UK’s most innovative home study provider, offering courses designed to unlock your true potential and facilitate the career change you desire. Specifically, explore the flexible and convenient Hospitality Management (Level 3) course, an ideal way to gain a diploma qualification. Whether you aim for further education, improved job prospects, or expanded knowledge, this comprehensive course allows you to prepare thoroughly for exams or careers through home study. Plus, it’s structured to be accessible and beneficial even if you have no prior knowledge in Hospitality Management.

The hospitality industry is probably the largest industry in the world and its four sectors are major industries in their own right: food and beverage; accommodation; travel and tourism, and leisure and recreation. The industry, as a whole, is continually expanding and changing offering its employees endless opportunities in a dynamic environment. This course will provide an overview of the hospitality industry. It can be a platform for further study at level 4; a starting point to enter the industry; or simply a source of information for anyone who is interested in this dynamic industry.

 Course Key Topics

the Hospitality Management (Level 3) course is divided into 10 modules.

Module 1: An Overview of the Hospitality Industry
The hospitality industry, in its entirety, is probably the largest global industry. Excluding the food and beverage sector, the industry generated 2.36 trillion US dollars in 2014 with all indicators show continuing growth over the next few decades: the only global industry that continued to grow during the recession.

In this unit you will learn the structure of the industry and gain an insight into how the 4 main sectors interact. You will start to understand how fluid the industry is and the need for those involved in the industry to continually adapt to changes in demand.

Module 2: Leadership and Management
The hospitality industry is all about pleasure and entertainment: it is driven by disposable income, the amount of leisure time available and fashion. For example, one of the largest growing markets in the world is the Chinese market due to increases in income and leisure time plus increased exposure to the media which has made Chinese consumers more aspirational and more liberated.

In this unit you will be introduced to the essential elements of all successful business management: sound leadership skills; financial planning and analysis of supply and demand. In addition, you will start to understand how changes in fashion, culture and the media influence the industry and how a successful manager can diversify and modify their product to accommodate the changes in demand.

Module 3: Human Resource Management and Customer Service
The hospitality industry is a ‘people orientated’ industry: to keep in business, hospitality businesses must ‘keep the customer satisfied’. Business travellers demand efficient, polite service in order to conduct their own business goals effectively. The day tripper or holiday maker want relaxation, enrichment or fun, whatever their motivation they will expect courteous, enthusiastic customer service. With so much choice now available, but often of a similar kind, customer service is the value added that can draw the consumers in.

In this unit you will explore how businesses can develop and maintain a customer service culture and clear customer service standards. You will understand the importance of teams and team building and the difficulties that have to be overcome in an industry where high staff turnover and a high percentage of remote employees are prevalent. The important role of human resource management will be discussed and assessed.

Module 4: Marketing and Public Relations
Well planned, motivating promotion and marketing is essential for success in hospitality in the 21st century.
You will learn about the traditional methods of promotion and advertising; the role of public relations and the impact of social media on the industry.

Module 5: Environment and Sustainability
Sustainability is about the economic, social, cultural and environmental effects both at a local and global level of human activity. Due to climate change, increased public awareness and dwindling resources, sustainability is now high on the global political and economic agenda. The hospitality industry, due to its nature, has received much criticism as to its impact on the environment and its lack of sustainable development.

In this unit you will learn the basic principles of sustainability; gain an understanding of the historical inadequacies of the hospitality industry (particularly travel and tourism), and explore the ways and means that the industry as a whole is addressing the issues.

Module 6: Food and Beverage
Catering is at the heart of the hospitality industry and satisfies the needs of both locals and visitors.
In this unit you will appreciate the vast range of food and beverage providers. You will consider the distinction between a hospitality provider and a convenience outlet to evaluate the importance of the distinction. You will understand how the law, in particular food safety and health and safety, impact on the sector.

Module 7: Accommodation
Traditionally, the hotel industry was seen as the hospitality industry and this is still the opinion of many. Although the industry, by definition, now encompasses a far greater range of enterprises, the hotel sector still generates an income of 550 billion US dollars, making it a significant sector.

In this unit we will examine how the accommodation sector has grown and diversified over the years. You will examine the role of branding and the dominance of the international brands. In addition, examine how the independent establishments continue to thrive in spite of the major internationals.

Module 8: Travel and Tourism
The travel and tourism industry is one of the largest industries in the world and is continuing to grow. In 2014 the industry generated 2364.8 billion US dollars, directly employing 105,408,000 workers. Its indirect impact is even greater, generating 7580.9 billion US dollars in revenue and supporting over 274,000,000 jobs in the wider economy such as retail, catering and banking. The career opportunities are vast and varied.

In this unit you will appreciate the diversity of the travel and tourism industry and how it interacts and overlaps with the other hospitality sectors.

Module 9: Leisure and Recreation
The leisure and recreation sector is difficult to identify as it can be argued that all hospitality is based on leisure and recreation. A simplified definition is the enterprises that provide activities such as sport and for the pursuance of hobbies.
In this unit you will examine how leisure and recreation enterprises cater for local needs and their importance to the local economy and culture. In addition, you will explore the fastest growing area, health and wellbeing, and analyse the reasons for its growth.

Module 10: Events Management
Event management saw an explosion of growth from the late twentieth century and is still one of the fastest growing areas. Event management encompasses events from small local conferences, exhibitions and fairs to major international events such as the World Cup, the Olympics and G7 conferences.

In this unit you will learn the elements of good event management and analyse the impact of events on both the local and international environment.

Career Profile - Hotel Manager

Career Profile

Hotel management requires excellent people management skills and a calm, professional, approachable manner

As a hotel manager, you’ll be commercially accountable for budgeting and financial management and will need to plan, organise and direct all hotel services, including front-of-house (reception, concierge, and reservations), food and beverage operations and housekeeping.

In larger hotels, you’ll often have a specific remit, such as guest services, accounting or marketing, and your role will form part of a general management team.

Responsibilities
As a Hotel Manager, you’ll need to:

* plan and organise accommodation, catering and other hotel services
* promote and market the business
* manage budgets and financial plans and control expenditure
* maintain statistical and financial records
* set and achieve sales and profit targets
* analyse sales figures and devise market and revenue management strategies
* recruit, train and monitor staff
* plan work schedules for individuals and teams
* meet and greet customers
* deal with customer complaints and comments
* address problems and troubleshoot accordingly
* ensure events and conferences run smoothly
* supervise maintenance, supplies, renovations and furnishings
* deal with contractors and suppliers
* ensure security is effective
* carry out inspections of property and services
* ensure compliance with licensing laws, health and safety and other statutory regulations.

Salary

* Starting salaries for an assistant general manager are around £19,000 to £40,000. There will be variations depending on levels of competition, as well as the location and size of the hotel. Where a position requires the manager to ‘live in’, this will also be reflected in the salary offered.
* If you manage a small hotel or are the deputy manager of a larger hotel, expect a salary in the region of £20,000 to £35,000.
* As a general manager in London, you could earn £85,000 on average with a range of £50,000 to £200,000 for the largest, most prestigious hotels.

Salaries rise with performance and progression but will be lower in small, independent hotels. For managers employed by large, global hotel groups, where there are opportunities to work overseas, the financial rewards are considerable.

Additional benefits can include pension and life assurance schemes, private healthcare, shared-ownership schemes, live-in accommodation, meals on duty, clothing allowance or provision of uniform, a flexible working pattern and discounted hotel accommodation worldwide.

Salary data from the Berkley Scott Salary Survey 2020. Figures are intended as a guide only.

Working Hours

Your working hours will vary according to the type of hotel you’re working in and its location, but typically the role includes regular unsocial hours – late nights, weekends and bank holidays will all be part of your shift pattern. Working hours can be long and could restrict your social and family life.

What to expect

* Although some of the work is office-based, much of your time will be spent with customers and staff.
* Around 50% of hotel managers are self-employed in small hotels, motels, inns and residential clubs.
* Women are under-represented in senior management roles in the hospitality industry. Reviews, such as Women in Hospitality, Travel and Leisure 2020, address this issue and call on companies to support the progression of women into senior roles within the industry.
* Hotel management requires total commitment, as the work is exacting and demanding, with erratic, unsocial hours and constant pressures.
* Managers must dress smartly when on duty and must remain diplomatic, polite and patient at all times.
* Additional benefits can include pension and life assurance schemes, private healthcare, shared-ownership schemes, live-in accommodation, meals on duty, clothing allowance or provision of uniform, a flexible working pattern and discounted hotel accommodation worldwide.

Skills
You’ll need to have:

* a friendly personality, with a genuine desire to help and please others
* the ability to think clearly and make quick decisions
* good organisational and leadership skills
* numeracy and logistical planning skills
* a professional manner and a calm, rational approach in hectic situations
* the ability to balance customer and business priorities
* excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially when dealing with speakers of other languages
* proficiency in another language – this is not essential but could be an advantage, especially for hotels which are part of an international chain
* energy and patience
* a smart well-presented appearance.

Career prospects

Because the hospitality workforce is generally young and staff turnover is quite high, promotion prospects are good for motivated graduates.

Progression is usually from graduate trainee to assistant front-of-house manager or assistant food and beverage manager, to deputy manager and then head of department. The speed of your promotion to management level mainly depends on the size of the hotel and your success as a trainee but can generally be achieved within two years.

It may take longer to reach the post of hotel or general manager – typically a further five to six years – and you may need to relocate and/or change employer several times to do so.

Within larger hotel groups, promotion may be to a more strategic role, such as corporate marketing, human resources or finance, for which additional qualifications may be needed. There might also be opportunities to work at head office or regional level. Opportunities also exist for experienced managers to work as management consultants.

Grading & How it Works

The UK has a unique higher education grading system. Its most unique feature compared to traditional grading systems is that it aims to be more specific in describing students’ academic achievement.

This type of assessment method is highly valued because it offers many advantages. Most importantly it highlights your academic strengths and specific skills, therefore, it helps employers gain a better understanding of your true potential.

Since it is proved to be such an efficient tool to assess students’ performance, many foreign countries like Canada, Australia and India are using the same grading system on some occasions with small changes to fit into their own local educational context.

We use a letter grade scale from A to F to indicate the students’ academic performance. If you get an A it means you have shown outstanding knowledge whereas if you get an F it means your score is not sufficient to pass the exam.
